# Why Web3 brands repeat the same identity mistakes

The pattern of Web3 branding failures, and the identity moves that make crypto and AI startups look credible instead of samey.

## The gradient-and-grid problem

Web3 branding has a default look: a dark background, a purple-to-blue gradient, a geometric grid, a generic utility token icon. It is the fastest way to look like everyone else in a category that already looks the same.
The fix is not avoiding the cliches, it is earning them. A gradient is fine when it comes from a real brand decision (a product color, a light behavior), not when it fills space because dark-and-gradient is the default.

## Trust is the product

Crypto and AI brands sell trust in an environment built to be suspicious of them. Anonymity, vague roadmaps, and clone-branding actively destroy the credibility the category needs.
Named founders, real photography, a specific voice, and a plain-language explanation of what the product does are identity assets. They differentiate more than any logo mark.

## The wordmark test

Squint at your wordmark at 24 pixels. If it reads like every other token name (two syllables, a y or an x, no visual memory), the name is doing none of the branding work.
Strong Web3 names carry a visual anchor: a shape, a glyph, a letterform that survives a favicon. The name and mark should be one system, not a name plus a generic icon.
