How to score your homepage in 60 seconds

The 60-second scorecard

Most founders never look at their own homepage the way a first-time visitor does. The free brand audit at ratemybrand.pro automates this, but you can run the same five dimensions by hand in under a minute. Score each from 0 to 20.

The five dimensions: first impression (does it look credible in 3 seconds), message clarity (can you say what they do in one sentence), visual hierarchy (does the eye land where you want it), trust signals (proof, logos, numbers), and conversion path (is the next step obvious).

First impression is the score

Within three seconds a visitor decides whether your site is credible. That decision runs on layout, typography, and color — not copy. A 960px column, a consistent type scale, and one accent color are worth more than a paragraph of adjectives.

The fastest fix: screenshot your homepage, blur it heavily, and ask "what is this company, and what do they want me to do?" If you cannot answer from the blurred image, the hierarchy is failing.

Message clarity beats cleverness

Your first sentence should state the service, the audience, and the outcome. "We build brand identities for startups" outranks any pun. Save personality for after clarity lands.

Test it: read your hero headline to someone who has never heard of you. If they repeat it back close to verbatim, you pass. If they paraphrase it into a question, rewrite.

The conversion path test

Give the page to a stranger with one task: "book a call." Watch where they click. If they hesitate or scroll more than once, the path is broken. The next step should be visually distinct and present in the first screenful.

Most homepages fail here because the CTA competes with ten other links. One primary action per page. Everything else is secondary.
